Nesta Interviews Maldini
ForzaMilan magazine Jan issue has a Maldini interview and the interviews are Nesta and Kaladze each asking 5 questions. It’s the 2nd time that Nesta becomes an interviewer. I translate the part with Nesta, with many thanks to Joys for the Italian transcripts.
How did you feel at your SerieA debut?
I recall the tension before entering the pitch. But that is only a couple of minutes before I crossed the sideline, because I was with the first team and Mr. liedholm had mentioned the possibility of debut. And a few minutes before my entering, he even asked me where I’d like to play! Imagine the answer from a boy like me…“Where you want, sir.” Then he placed me on the left. It was a really unique day, unique to everyone who wants to be a football player and for those who love football. I imagine that for fifteen years.
and the debut in Nazionale?
More or less the same emotions. And it is normal to be more excited when you play in the Azzurro jersey. In my case, instead, I was very ready for my debut in the Nazionale, since I was 23 years old but had already different experiences with different levles of National teams: youth, Military, U-21 and the Olympic teams. All these logically leads to the debut in the Nazionale. And because of this, in fact, I had many teammates whom I played with in the U-21.
What did you say to your family after your first professional goal?
Nothing special. Or I don’t remember.
Think back, do you remember, just occasionally, the lost against us in the final of Coppa Italia ’98?
Yes….No…Well, I remember that game and I was respnsible for a goal. But the main reason I remember that game is after that we changed the coach and a large part of the team. After that, we cam back to a team that won a lot. You see, had we won that game, maybe we would not have changed so much and improved so much and ultimately reach the goals that everyone knows. That’s destiny…
How can you still run with so much desire after so many success?
It is not the case that I want to run because I do not…It is not that I like to run. I do it because I love this sport, love my work and therefore I don’t feel that much effort. Again, having won so much always gives me incentives to win more because when things go well and fun, everything becomes easier.

Che cosa hai provato quando hai debuttato in Serie A?
Ricordo la tensione prima di entrare in campo. Ma questo solo qualche minuto prima di varcare la linea laterale ,perché io ero con la prima squadra e mister Liedholm mi aveva accennato alla possibilità di debuttare. Qualche minuto prima del mio ingresso,addirittura,mi chiese dove preferivo giocare! Figurati cosa poteva rispondere un ragazzino come me…“Dove vuole lei mister”,gli dissi. Allora mi inserì sulla fascia sinistra e da lì cominciai. Ma è stata una giornata unica davvero. Lo è per chiunque desidera fare questo mestiere e per tutti coloro che amano il calico. Figurarsi per un quindicenne…
E in Nazionale?
Più o meno le stesse emozioni,anche se è normale che vestire la maglia azzurra ti dà quel brivido in più. Nel mio caso,però, il debutto in Nazionale A è arrivato sì presto, perché avevo 23 anni,ma arrivavo già da diverse esperienze con alter Nazionali:giovanili,Militare,Under 21 e Olimpica. Tutto questo logicamente e avvicinamento a quello che era il vestire quella maglia per la prima volta. Proprio per questo avevo, di fatto,molti compagni con cui avevo già giocato nell’Under 21.
Ricordi cosa ti disse la famlglia dopo il tuo primo gold a professionista?
Niente di particolare. O non mi ricordo…
Ripensì,ogni tanto,alla finale di Coppa Italia che avete perso contro di noi, nel ’98?
Sì… no… cioè. Mi viene in mente quella partita anche per come sì prese un certo gol(io il responsabile). Ma il motivo principale per cui ci penso è legato al fatto che dopo quella partita cambiammo allenatore e buona parte della squadra. Da lì tornammo a vincere parecchio. Quello che mi fa riflettere è questo, perché chissà… vincendo quella partita, forse, non avremmo modificato molte cose e magari non saremmo neanche arrivati ai traguardi che tutti conoscono. Il destino…
h4 Ma come fai a correre ancora con tutta questa voglia, dopo tanti successi?
Non è questione di avere voglia di correre,perché quella non ce l’ho… non è che mi piaccia molto.Lo faccio perché amo questo sport, il mio lavoro e quindi non mi costa fatica. Ripeto, aver vinto tanto mi ha sempre dato uno stimolo in più,perché quando le cose vanno bene ti diverti e tutto diventa più facile.
