Nesta related stuff from the 23 Adventures of Azzurri (1)

Since Nesta did not play today’s game, I am going to post some old stuff: the 23 Adventures of Azzurri series from World Soccer Magazine . The magazine interviews each player to recap their World Cup memores. Many thanks go to hal for translating the series (from Japanese) and allowing us to repost here. There are 3 parts that mention Nesta.

Azzurri adventures by Andrea Barzagli and Christian Zaccardo

I only post the part they mention Nesta

andrea: “changing the subject from off to on the pitch, alessandro nesta was amazing.”

cris: “seriously amazing.”

andrea: “even when we’re playing mini-games during training, we’re constantly going, ‘why are you positioned there?”

cris: “that’s why it was unfortunate that he got injured soon after the tournament started.”

andrea: “but don’t you remember how he was before the tourney? at coverciano and right after we moved to germany? when i paired up with him for one of the mini-games, he completely shut out pippo who was playing against us. the one and only pippo! he’s a genius at getting through the back of a defender, but never nesta’s. to use cristian’s words, he’s something else. that’s how i felt.”

cris: “in that sense, our captain cannavaro was amazing in different ways. he doesn’t have as much technique as nesta does, but he has this phenomenal explosiveness. add to that charisma, fighting spirit, the ability to concentrate…he has everything.”

andrea: “and that’s not all that’s amazing about the captain. he has that neapolitan brand of cheerfulness about him. he has such an incredibly sunny personality that naturally draws people.”

cris: “during camp, there were what was dubbed ‘cannavaro parties’ held. he’s a serious gourmet…or rather, an unbelievable big-eater. (laughs) and there would be spaghetti parties hosted by the captain at midnight in coverciano. the captain himself would go around the rooms, inviting people.”

andrea: “no one can eat that much pasta served on a plate that big at midnight! (laughs)”

cris: “yup, that’s why i wasn’t invited after party no. 1.”

andrea: “they’re secret parties, so naturally, the (names of the) participants are top secret too. it goes without saying that whomever tries to inform lippi won’t make it back alive. i guess that’s all due to the captain’s charisma too; conveying so much with so few words. (laughs)”

cris: “but it’s easy to guess who the participants were. in addition to marco amelia and perruzzi, vincenzo iaquinta. and nesta too. contrary to how he appears, he loves to eat. i bet he was quietly munching down some amatriciana. (laughs)”

andrea: “as well as coach ciro ferrara! a neapolitan just like the captain, he’s always there when there’s something fun going on. or more accurately, he’s always the one who ends up telling people what to do. (laughs)”

cris: “in any case, we strengthened our unity around cannavaro.”

andrea: “and that’s why we won. italy is technically not on a level to top the world. it was evident that we were inferior in terms of technique. so you see, it wasn’t just victory we gained in germany. how to face a game, the attitude, to be always aware that you’re a professional and to be perfectly prepared…i think that’s what we learned from the veterans.”
