“when i returned (from the hospital), my team-mates were (all) excited over their win against czech republic. (everyone except) me and one other – daniele, who was sent off in our second match against the US. but what was great was that daniele and i were able to build a strong friendship after that. guess we have to thank our misfortunes. me and daniele grew up in lazio and roma’s youth (clubs) respectively. our relationship was literarily oil and water.
on the day after the czech game, i saw him sitting all alone looking lonely and asked him, ‘what’s wrong?’. that’s how it started. since then, he began to come to me for advice whenever something happened. he’d come looking for me whenever he needed (someone) to listen to him as he struggled with the pain. he really regretted that elbow against mcbride during our match against the US.
i eventually began to think of him as my younger brother.
we continued to confide in each other and talked about many things. he asked me so many questions. like ‘how did you feel when you left lazio?’ or ‘don’t you think milano’s gloomy?’ (laughs) and, ‘don’t you want to return to roma?’. of course i’m not going to tell you how i answered the last question. (laughs)
(when i was diagnosed) everyone around me didn’t know what to say. but of course. italy was about to step forward to make new history. daniele just quietly pat my shoulder.”
Nesta also says he wants to concure Europe with Azzurri
‘‘i still ask why. it was supposed to be me who was going to team up with fabio to become the best (central back) pair in the world. and there was even the possibility of my name being on the ballon d’or shortlist.
right now, my mind is on euro 08 to avenge my dissappointment at the wc. i want to achieve an important victory with my own hands. i’m going to team up with fabio again and play in every single match. i want to help italy conquer europe.’‘
